Guide for New Residents
Municipal Services and Utilities
Falcon Heights maintains a Volunteer Fire Department of about 28 persons. A Fire Chief and two Assistant Fire Chiefs are appointed by the Council to three year terms of office. The department maintains three fire engines to meet emergency needs. One firefighter sleeps in the department headquarters at night in order to be on hand should a call come in. All volunteer firefighters are equipped with a pager which notifies them of a fire or rescue call at any time. Residents interested in learning more about the volunteer fire department, or about becoming a volunteer firefighter should contact City Hall at 651-792-7600. More information about our fire department.
If a fire, police, or medical emergency should arise, residents should simply dial 911. By dialing 911, you will assure yourself the quickest possible emergency service.
A Fire Inspector is employed by the City part-time to perform such tasks as preventive and new construction inspections.
We contract for police service from the City of St. Anthony. An active Neighborhood Liaison Program is in place. It is sponsored by the Neighborhood Commission and your neighbors to promote a safer and more friendly community. If you are interested in volunteering for your blockclub, call City Hall
Falcon Heights provides residents with a municipal sewer system. Our water is supplied by the St. Paul Water Utility. Billings for sewer and water are made directly to residents by the Utility.
We maintain several City parks to meet the recreational needs of our residents. Please refer to the map for the location of the parks. Look here for a listing of the amenities our parks provide.
The City operates a recreation program under the direction of a part-time recreation supervisor. The activities take place at the parks, Falcon Heights School and Commonwealth Terrace (U of M student housing). Recreation programs are publicized in the City Newsletter, local newspapers and in flyers sent home with school children. Two citywide social events are held each year. An ice cream social is held in late July, and a winter carnival day is held in February.
Also sponsored under the Parks and Recreation program is the Falconeers Senior Club, which meets the second and fourth Mondays of each month for card games and refreshments.
The City employs maintenance workers to care for the park system, streets, and sewer system. Some of the repair work done to streets and sewers, as well as snow removal and sanding City streets, is provided by private contractors and Ramsey County.
Electricity and gas are provided for the City by franchise with Xcel Energy, which directly bills residents for these services. Rate charges are supervised by the State Public Utilties Commission.
Cable television is offered through Comcast. Channel 16 is set aside for the exclusive use of Falcon Heights so residents may view city concil meetings and other special programs.
The City Website can be found at www.ci.falcon-heights.mn.us. City Council and Planning Commission meetings are web streamed on this site.
While the City does not maintain a public transportation system, several Metro Transit bus lines serve Falcon Heights. Call Metro Transit at 612/349-7000 for route information.
The City provides curbside recycling by contracting with a local recycling hauler. Items must be placed curbside or on the alley by 7:00 a.m. on the first and third Friday of each month. More recycling information.
