About Radon

In late 2004, Falcon Heights residents received a brochure about Radon, delivered with their monthly flyer.

Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that may be present in Falcon Heights homes. It is naturally occuring in the earth and enters buildings by seeping in through the basement. Radon exposure is known to be associated with lung cancer. Please read the update below!

Here are some links to help you learn more about Radon and find out how you can make your home safer:

Does Falcon Heights provide any radon services?

No, we do not. We do not license radon mitigation contractors, and neither does the State of Minnesota. We do not keep a list of recommended contractors. Please use the same precautions you would use when hiring any kind of contractor to work on your home. The Minnesota Department of Health web page (above) has some good tips on finding a contractor.

How can I test my home and how much does it cost?

You can purchase a test kit for as little as $5.00 from this North Carolina company. They are offering kits at a discount to Minnesota residents by arrangement with WCCO-TV. You can also buy more expensive tests that cost up to about $30.

Update!

Radon test kits are available for $9.00 through the Saint Paul-Ramsey County Department of Public Health Department, Environmental Health Section. To purchase a radon test kit, download an order form at http://www.co.ramsey.mn.us/ph/eh/indoorair_radon.asp and mail it, along with check or money order to: Environmental Health Section, 1670 Beam Ave, Suite A, Maplewood MN 55109-1176. For more information on radon or to have a test kit order form mailed to you, call 651.773.4466.

What does it cost to fix the problem, if I have one in my home?

Fixing a radon problem in your home costs between $500 and $2500, but it may save your life!
